Fred Jorgenson reports from the ship "Columbia," about to explore the Columbia River. Lewis and Clark begin to explore and establish a fort on the river in 1794. Hugh Brundage reports from their fort. Lloyd Perrin reports from the Fort Vancouver Hudson's Bay Company and talks with a botanist. Fever strikes in East Oregon, wagon trains settle the Willamette Valley. "The Baker Street Irregulars" sing. Hales Sparks tells of the role of the missionaries and Hugh Brundage reports from the Whitman Mission near the Oregon Trail. The Cayuse Indians are wiped out by the measles, contracted at the mission. Carmen Dragon and His Orchestra play part of the Fifth Symphony of George Frederick MacKay, a native of the Washington Territory. A treaty signed in 1776 with the British gives us the land that will eventually form five states. |
